Today is the day!

We're heading to Atlanta once I get off of work today and then to IKEA tomorrow morning - new living room furniture is just hours away! I can't believe it's finally happening. :) Couch, chairs, table, shelving, perhaps lighting and a rug... I'm hoping to tackle some painting in the coming weeks, so that the house finally stops feeling so blah. I think The Bip's honey-do list is going to be pretty full once he's done with finals next week!

Josh finally got his TV sold on Craigslist last night. We're holding off on buying a new one for the living room for now, until we see where summer leads him as far as jobs go. I think everything will be fine, but it's best to err on the side of caution, especially with the wedding coming up. So, we're just going to use our bedroom TV in the living room for now, and put the 3rd bedroom tv in our room. We're also holding off on the painting of the trim until we see how the job thing goes. Trim painting is not going to be a cheap job, nor is it one I feel comfortable going the DIY route on. We have a LOT of trim - 4 inch moulding around the windows and doors and 6 inch baseboards! I can live with the stained wood trim a while longer, as long as I can get some color on the walls, while Josh feels the opposite. Oh, love... such a compromise sometimes! ;)

Speaking of that sweet love o' mine, one of the many things I love about him is that he wears my "Cooter's" hoodie all the time. It's too short for him in the torso and sleeves, but he doesn't care. He puts it on when he studies, when he goes out to water the garden, any time there is a bit of a chill in the air. It never fails to make me smile.

So dang endearing.

In wedding news - everything has been reserved! We got the reception venue we wanted, and found an adorable cottage to honeymoon in through Mermaid Cottages. http://www.mermaidcottages.com/ We'll be staying at "The Shrimp". All is set to go for September 4th. :) We're keeping it pretty simple, but I am looking for forward to all of it, especially the food! We're looking into doing personalized Jones Soda bottles, too. I was thinking root beer? Yum! How good would that be mixed with some vanilla vodka? Like a sinful root beer float... Okay, so now I'm hungry and thirsty... moving on...

I can't seem to go one entry without talking about our garden, can I? So why stop now? Right now we're celebrating OUR FIRST BROCCOLI! It was so exciting to see it last night. We check on everything every day when I get home from work, and it's just crazy what all can happen in a garden in a day!

Broccoli:

Here's how everything looks 2.5 weeks in:

Our Zucchini and Broccoli are the overacheivers so far, but the thyme, dill, peppers, rosemary, tarragon, basil and pumpkins are trucking right along at an amazing pace, too. I think we're down to one yellow squash plant (boo!), but at least it's not dead yet. And the lavender has done nothing. It's still nice and green and lovely, but it has not grown one bit. We're still hopeful about everything, though. And we have two more asparagus!

Our first three asparagus came up on the 23rd of this month.4 days later, this is how tall they were:

One last bit of yard talk - I think it's a maple tree in our backyard, near the garage, but it has just sprouted the strangest flowers... I've never seen such tropical looking flowers on such a plain ol' suburban tree before!

Pretty, though!

Abandoned nests and changed plans....

As soon as we got above freezing temperatures, I bought two ferns for my porch. Immediately, birds built nests in both of them. Both were abandoned, one with an egg in it (sad!). In the meantime, my ferns croaked (I couldn't risk drowning baby birds). Over the weekend, I decided I had waited long enough for the irresponsible birdie parents to come back. I took down the ferns, removed the nests, cut all the dead leaves out, and took the ferns out back and doused them with lots of water and Miracle-Gro. I fear I'm too late to resuscitate, but it's worth a try! And next year I won't hang plants until nest building season is over.

While I'm on the subject of plants, of course I have to talk about our garden. Everything is doing beautifully. We lost some yellow squash plants due to critters. I don't know if we lost them all, because we planted them next to the zucchini, and at this stage of things, they look exactly the same! Doh!

Our three little asparagus stalks are over a foot tall and branching out. I don't know if this is going to turn into the fabled 'asparagus fern' that is supposed to come and grow up to three feet tall or not. This is our first time, so we're learning as we go. We're also getting some good rain lately, which has done more for everything growing than our liberal waterings and feedings ever could. Sunflowers are good.

I found out that the mystery plant in my backyard

is a peony!

We stumbled on the answer by accident while browsing Home Depot over the weekend for more plants (planted dasies, mint, oregano & poppies in containers on the back deck). I am so glad that we decided against cutting it. There is even another one coming up right next to it now!

It wasn't there last year, and I am thinking that perhaps it was mowed down before I moved in in June. Maybe being dormant so long is why it is growing with a vengeance now? Can't wait until it blooms... I bet they will smell heavenly. The only problem is that we will have to transplant them once we add the patio... that's not going to happen right away, of course, but I just hope they will be ok. You can't beat beautiful blooming flowers that take no work!

Believe it or not, there is more going on in our lives than just worrying about gardening. Our wedding plans have been changed and we're so excited bout them! We ditched the Vegas wedding and Mexico honeymoon and decided instead to do it all on Tybee Island. This way we can have more people there and an actual gathering and mingling of our families. We'll have a few close friends, too. And we still get our beach, but I don't have to get on a plane! You have no idea how happy that makes me. Plus it's going to cost the same (maybe less) than we originally budgeted for our elopement/honeymoon, and we get a 'real' party.

We were really excited about the plans we did have, but we're both even more excited now. We're waiting to hear back on if our first choice of reception venue is available. The wedding will be on the beach. The dress I had picked out is not going to work with the new plan, but I've found a couple of light, breezy dresses that could be perfect. We're going to have lots of sunflowers and good food, while keeping things very casual and summery. We've found the perfect honeymoon cottage (waiting for a call back about that, too), and we couldn't be happier about this change of plans. We're only going to get to be there a few days (Fri-Tues) because of Josh's school schedule. The actual 'honeymoon' is only going to be about two days long (Sunday and Monday... we'll drive home on Tuesday), but I know it's going to be the greatest mini-honeymoon of all time. If anyone can pack a ton of love and fun into a short amount of time, it's us.

And the most drool-worthy part? The 'specialty' beach wedding cake of the place we're using is POUND CAKE WITH BUTTERCREAM ICING. Yum, yum yum!

This is what a stoned dog looks like.

Poor Jorge freaks out during storms. He is prescribed doggie xanax for it. It doesn't really help. You'd think it'd knock him out, but he just fights it, stumbles around, runs into things, and loses the ability to keep his tongue in his mouth. Like this.

Obviously, we're having inclement weather here today.

Our garden is getting a good watering, though!

Stuff I love....

My Globes

My boys (Jorge and Julio)

This guy

And our future front door color. Good thing we picked it when we did, because they are discontinuing Ralph Lauren paints,  we can at least get it color matched since we have the swatch!

We love the way it looks with the grey house and white trim. We're going to put some new black numbers and hardware on the door, add a new black porch light and mailbox, and paint the swing and add some outdoor pillows to it. As with all our decorating plans, we disagree on at least a minor part of it... in this case, it's what color to paint the porch swing. I let him win on the door color (I just wanted black), so shouldn't I get to pick the swing color? What do you think?

It's a good, good morning!

First of all - it's FRIDAY!

Secondly, I got to work today way early with much time to spare (traffic has been so unkind lately).

Thirdly, yesterday I read a tip online about sprinkling red pepper flakes around your garden to deter squirrels, rabbits, etc. And I don't know WHO has been eating our squash leaves (and one pumpkin leaf), but that crap ends now. So, this morning I woke up when my alarm went off, put on some shoes and trudged out the door with my trusty sidekicks (Julio and Jorge) and an arsenal of red pepper flakes.

As I was sprinkling them around I noticed something that made my heart stop. Overnight, 3 asparagus spears had popped up!!!! They are thin and tiny and adorable. I ran back in the house and told the Bip to put on some shoes (and some pants while he was at it). You should have seen the grin on his face when he saw them. Then he had to talk to them a little (of course!) and give them some extra red pepper for protection.

You know I took some pictures, right?

Finally living the life I've always wanted. Boring to most, but thrilling to me.

How does our garden grow??

Do you know what this is?? It's a pumpkin seed that has sprouted!

And here are two more! Out of the 6 pumpkin seeds we planted, 3 are up already!

And now, check out the photo below. See all those sprouts.... dozens and dozens of them.... SUNFLOWERS!

The day we planted everything....

And how it looks today... 10 days later.

Filling out quite nicely, yes?

Look at the Dill and Broccoli!

And of course look at the basil!!

It's so stinkin beautiful! We're so excited.

It's got mee!

The pollen counts are OUTRAGEOUS here this spring (something about lots of warm weather and not enough rain and over-producing fruit trees). The Bip and I are both suffering (of course I like to think I am suffering more, because I AM WOMAN and therefore a martyr as well), so today I asked him to pick up some Benadryl while he was out running errands.

While I have to wait until 5:00 to rush home and swallow my share of the magic pink pills, he took one immediately upon purchase. I talked to him at lunch and he said he was staying busy, had to study, etc. He felt he had to keep moving so the Benadryl wouldn't 'get him' and knock him into dreamland.

An hour or so ago I texted him and asked "Are you awake?"

I received this reply (complete with typo): "It's got mee."

**************************

And, since no one likes a post without a picture, here is a picture of him in my Papa's old tshirt. That's me on the front, at about 2 years old.

Let's see if I can get another post written in between sneezes....

In the midst of our outdoor planting frenzy a couple of weeks ago, we haphazardly scattered some sunflower and daisy seeds along the side of the garage. The house is 82 years old, and Josh seems to think that the garage is original to the house. It may be - there are a couple more on the street just like it. It has a very solid foundation, but some of the boards need replaced and it needs a coat of paint like yesterday! Hopefully we'll get to the outside of it within the next year (the inside is going to be even more fun, but it's a ways off yet), but in the meantime, we thought some mixed sunflowers growing up against the weathered boards would at least be charming.

However, every time we went out to water the sunflower seeds, we'd see little holes where the dang squirrels were digging them up. Just about the time we had given up on having anything grow there, we noticed sprouts. SPROUTS! So, it looks like we may have some sunflowers growing after all...

I probably get way more excited about these kinds of things than the average person.

As far as "how does our garden grow", everything seems to be hanging in there. The basil is visibly growing, and everything else is still alive. Nothing sprouting where the asparagus and pumpkins are planted yet, though.

*********

In other news, we've been re-arranging the garage, sorting through things for the Yard Sale that is FINALLY GOING TO HAPPEN! Of course, I had hoped it would happen sooner, but it's just easier to get things done in the spring weather. Now that the days are longer and the weather is still somewhat mild and not too hot, I find myself all sorts of motivated.

Not to mention that we're less than two weeks away from our IKEA trip and NEW FURNITURE, so I am anxious to get everything else ready to get the H out. I'm the type that gets easily emotionally attached to stuff, even when I don't need it, thinking it might be perfect somewhere "someday". But I am overcoming that, because right now I am more emotionally attached to the idea of what my house can be - someday very soon - with all the extraneous stuff out of it.

May 8th is our community yard sale, and we have a lot of stuff to say farewell to... looking forward to it! Also looking forward to sharing the upcoming progress as our house becomes more of a home... Anyone want to help me try to talk the Bip into this floor lamp for our living room??

Birthday Girl

Over the weekend, we celebrated my favorite baby girl's first birthday! Sweet little Kaelyn turned 1, and her momma threw her a pretty party.

Look at her cute Lemonade Pucker!

Delicious Cake Pops (The Bip got a little obsessive with these):

I wish I would have taken more pictures, but I was too busy trying to figure out how to smuggle out the adorable birthday girl and keep her for my very own!

Beautiful day, beautiful party.... Good job, Daeon!

Home Sweet Home

Maybe it's silly to smile at the sight of your neighborhood water tower, but I do it anyway.

Every day after driving home from work, when I turn into my little 'hood I see the water tower proudly proclaiming our location.

And I know I'm home.

A beautiful walk through our neighborhood with the iphone.

As I've said before, springtime in Nashville is absolutely gorgeous. I am beyond in love with my neighborhood, and Bip and I have been enjoying leisurely 1.5 mile walks around it in the evenings. Leaves on the trees, flowers in bloom, historic homes galore. By the way, have I mentioned I am also in love with his iphone? The 'shake-it' photo app makes everything look even more lovely, and we utilized it on our walk last night so we could capture some of the prettiness that is all over the village. It even made this poor amputated Barbie arm look somwhat artfully placed.

Things not of the plastic limb variety:

Dream House. I think it has 7 or 8 bedrooms.

And, just as further proof that the 'shake it' app makes everything beautiful, look how tasty it made Josh's lunch look the other day! (Chips he dipped in hummus not pictured)

He makes the best sandwiches!

Perfect Weekend, Part 2 (SUNDAY)

Sunday we somehow managed to sleep in until 9 (how decadent! Especially since I was up before 7 on Saturday) and once we had some breakfast, we headed to Lowe's. Our plan was to find a Dogwood tree to plant in the backyard. There was already an existing hole in the middle of the backyard... someone somewhere along the way had dug something up there (a small tree or shrub, I assume. Nothing exciting, like BURIED TREASURE or anything).

When we got there, we browsed the trees... No Dogwoods! I thought they'd be everywhere and easy to find since they are currently in bloom. We nosed around the garden center and Josh pointed out to me a 4x4 pre-made raised garden bed. Exactly what I wanted for our first garden. I thought we'd have to make the box ourselves, but we didn't. Thanks, Lowe's! Making a garden was one of our tentative plans for next weekend, but it ended up happening yesterday instead, thanks to that chance find.

We picked out some plants, and even bought a fig tree (more like a fig twig; we let a fellow customer talk us into buying the smallest one. He said they grow fast and that we'd want one that wasn't too acclimated to 'life in the bucket', so to speak.

Luckily, Home Depot is right across the street from Lowe's so we headed there next. I still had hope of finding a Dogwood, and there were a few plants I couldn't find at Lowe's that I wanted (in my experience, Home Depot always has a much better plant selection). We did find a few things there, and a Dogwood (yay!), but the most important thing we got there was lots of topsoil for about $2 a bag. Unfortunately, I was unable to find leaf lettuce, and that's the one thing I was REALLY looking forward to growing this year. Perhaps we'll find another way to go about it this year. I don't want to wait until next year!

We brought all of our goodies home and into the backyard.

First up, we planted our beautiful little Dogwood.

Below you can see where the tree is in relation to the house... I love my little house and I love my big yard. We have lots of plans for both, but they're still pretty cute as is. My sweet little house makes me smile!

Next we planted our Fig Twig in the back right corner of the yard. We plan to add a couple more fruit trees and/or bushes in the same corner. Our own little orchard! Maybe we can add them this spring, but if not, next year for sure. We want to add a privacy fence within the next couple of years and also a second fence from the back of the garage to the back of the yard. That way, our garden/fruit tree area will be it's own little separate sweet place.

Next, we moved on to the main event. The Garden! Here's where Josh and I differ. I would have just set the box up, raked up/broke up the existing grass at the bottom, dumped in the dirt and got to planting! Lucky for me, the Bip likes to do things the correct way. That means, trenches were dug, grass was removed, THEN the garden bed was set up and we got to do the fun stuff.

Here she is in all her glory!

There are blank spots on the sides - that's where we planted asparagus and some little white 'lumina' pumpkins. The other ends are herbs - basil, rosemary, thyme, dill, tarragon, lavender. The middle is veggies - zucchini, squash, broccoli and jalapenos. We may have planted too much, but we'll just see what happens and thin plants out if need be. This is our first time having a 'real' garden in our adult lives, and we're pumped! Next year, we plan to add three more of these 4x4 plots, making an 8x8 square. The current plot we have will grow asparagus (since it's already planted and comes up every year) and herbs (since some of them are perrenials). We'll also have two plots of veggies and one plot of perrenials (daisies, hydrangeas, etc) to use as a cutting garden.

We also planted some sunflower seeds along the garage... we'll see if they take. They are the big kind! 8"-10" blooms - dinner plate sized!

We also have a mystery plant by our bird feeder. I am not sure if some rogue, quick-growing seed fell out of the feeder and turned into this or if it is something else. It has tons of buds on it, but nothing has bloomed yet. We're not going to get rid of it until we see what it is... just in case it is something pretty.

Believe it or not, we were done with our gardening adventures by 1:30! That left us plenty of time to get cleaned up and have some more Rita's!

Josh got strawberry ice this time, I once again had the mango. It was a refreshing reward for all of our hard work.

We then visited two open houses in our neighborhood. It's always fun to look for inspiration, and seeing other houses at their best makes us even more determined to make our home the best it can be... a true 'dream home'. Josh even stopped at a house a few streets away from us that has the same floor plan (just reversed), and asked the owner (she was outside) if he could go in and look at where her stairway was located. See, we live in a one-story house, but many people with the same house have converted their attics into additional living space. I was thinking about putting the stairs in the third (smallest) bedroom (soon to be library) when we do that, to keep the basic layout of the house the same. I have great respect for old homes, and the homes in my neighborhood specifically, and I don't want to do too much to them to destroy the original charm.

Anyway, she let Josh in (he's just that charming - I'd never let a stranger in my house, but I'd probably make an exception for him if he were a stranger to me... he's just that dang handsome!), and sure enough, the stairway was located in the third bedroom! So we're on the right track with our thinking there.

We relaxed for a little bit, I went to the grocery store, and that was the end of our (very enjoyable!) weekend. Can't wait for the next one... hoping to tackle the garage a bit more!

I just have to include this picture of Julio because it makes me smile.
