Red Hot Vodka!

Today is tasting day for this Jalapeno vodka I am infusing for my friend LeAnn to use in her Bloody Marys. It only needs 2-3 days to infuse. Tomorrow we get to taste test the pear vodka and see if it needs an extra two days, and Sunday the strawberry vodka will be ready!

I ordered these two books yesterday for more inspiration:

I'm very excited to get some more ideas and get cracking on homemade xmas gifts!

And today I am wearing new pants which is very exciting! They fit! All of my fall/winter clothes were on their last legs (some long past their expiration) last year, but I just couldn't afford anything new. Josh promised me I could get some new clothes this year if I just stuck it out last year. So I did, and I have a few new things right now and more on the way. Very excited and appreciative.

Pumpkins

I snagged this photo from Martha Stewart's website... Doesn't it make you smile?

I'm so excited to go pumpkin shopping this weekend!

Things I am looking forward to:

1. The weekend. Is it the weekend yet?

2. Buying some fall clothes (I donated most of mine, and it's starting to get chilly. Momma needs some pants!)

3. Buying some new Essie nail polishes for fall. Little Brown Dress and Sew Psyched:

4. Trying two new recipes from the "Put Em Up" book: Chili-Tomato Jam (it's supposed to be excellent on cornbread), and Peach butter. Hopefully I will have time this weekend or next for that...

5. Putting up Fall/Halloween decorations this weekend. Cobwebs, lots of crazy pumpkins, mums, the whole deal.

6. Perhaps procuring more books on canning and infusing, since I'm in the mood and we're doing mostly homemade Christmas gifts this year (we found the cutest bottles to put the vodkas in, and I can't wait to locate all my crafting stuff so I can make cute labels). These books are at the top of my list:

7. Once I have all my canning and preserving done, I can start thinking about assembling gift baskets! This is one of my favorite things to do at Christmas. It's great for the hard-to-buy-for crowd... everyone loves homemade goodies. Last year I made assorted cookies (sugar, no-bakes, gingerbread and choc/peanut butter fudge), beer bread, and homemade strawberry jam for everyone's baskets. Here is one from last year:
first finished gift basket of the season

8. Before it gets too cold, painting and "re-knobbing" a dresser for the bedroom and a small buffet for second bedroom. This is the buffet. It's hideously folk-art painted at the moment:
picked this up at a garage sale in the neighborhood...
I got it at a yard sale about 6 years ago... it's been in storage for 5 of those years, and surprise surprise, I haven't gotten around to painting it yet. I would love to tackle the painting projects this weekend. Of course, Lord only knows if or when I will ever get around to doing my dining table and chairs, which need it oh-so-badly. But we need the dresser and the buffet the most right now (buffet will become storage for extra bath linens and such).

9. Planning a menu and costumes for a small Halloween Cocktail Party we are hosting... I adore Halloween and small get-togethers with good people in costume!

While I am a Summer girl at heart, I love what fall brings - the hearty & homey foods, and the Holidays that come one right after another - Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years. So much to look forward to this year as I celebrate properly with my new husband in a house that feels a little more homey each day!

Many things to be grateful for!!

Making Fig Jam

I could not wait to make this fig jam yesterday. After I did my vodka infusions, I went to the gym and then came home and got right to it. My mom taught me how to can a few years ago, and it's suprisingly easy (although I've only done jams, jellies and fruit butters so far). This post is not intended to be a step-by-step, but it's a good overview, especially if you've never canned before but would like to try. Hopefully this will inspire you.

I stemmed and quartered 2 lbs of black mission figs. This one is only halved, but it was pretty so I took a picture.

Add the figs to one cup of water in a non-reactive pot (I used my Le Creuset) and bring to a boil. Once it boils, turn down to a simmer and let it cook for 10 minutes, while mashing with a potato masher.

Then you add in a cup (I think?) of sugar, a half cup of balsamic vinegar and a quarter cup of bottled lemon juice (I normally never use bottled, but it's what the recipe specified, so that's what I used). Bring to a boil again, then reduce to a simmer and let it go for about 20 minutes. Keep mashing periodically.

Put in sterilized jars with sterilized lids (very important!). Process with boiling water method for 10 minutes. Remove from water, wait for the seals to pop, tighten the lid rings, and leave them alone for 24 hours. Eat. Give as gifts. Keeps for 1 year.

It's wonderful on biscuits or toast, but it's absolutely knock-your-socks-off delicious on cheese and crackers. Especially on top of a sharp or really flavorful cheese.

Enjoy!

Infused Vodkas

The book I mentioned in my last post had some recipes for infusing vodka, so we decided to try two of them out. We get to sample them on Sunday, and if they turn out, then I think we'll be making more for Christmas gifts...

#1 (and by far the easiest) Strawberry Infusion.

Cut the tops off of a bunch of strawberries (I think we used an 8 oz. package?). Slice them in half. Put in clean jar or other container with tight fitting lid. Cover with two cups of vodka. Put lid on tightly. Store in cool, dark place for 7 days, giving it a good shake every other day. After 7 days, strain solids out with mesh strainer, but give everything in strainer a good smoosh for some extra oomph in your wodka. Repackage in clean jar. Drink. (I think this would be good mixed with lemonade, but I love lemonade and vodka anyway).

#2 Pear/Vanilla/Cinnamon infusion.

Peel, core and chop three ripe pears into 2 inch chunks.

Throw in a saucepan with a half cup (I think) of sugar, a broken cinnamon stick and one vanilla bean. Cook for about 10-15 minutes, until it's all nice and mushy and blended.

When it cools down, transfer to clean jar and cover with 2 cups of vodka.

Allow to sit in cool dark place for 5-7 days, giving it a shake every couple of days. Try it on the 5th day to see if it needs extra two days. Use same straining method mentioned in Strawberry Infusion recipe. Serve cold or over ice.

How I got my Martha back...

Wow! I truly had one of the most productive weekends in recent memory.

I love being the crafty cooking type, but I've gotten away from it in the last year or two. I'm not sure why, but it slipped away from me. It was a weird couple of years. I am trying really hard to get back to that, even trying to organize a monthly potluck/crafting night with some local friends - I really hope it takes off, because it would be wonderful. I think it'd be way more fun than the typical "girls night". And just for the record , I absolutely abhor the phrases "girls night" and "date night". Both make me shudder. But that's neither here nor there. I cannot change the lexicon of the world single-handedly. All I can do is try not to utter those dreaded phrases myself. Even though I just typed them.

I received this book in the mail Saturday*

And I highly, highly, highly recommend it if you are into canning and preserving foods, or even if you just want to learn. It has a step by step guide to various preserving techniques, and tons of recipes. It really inspired me so much that I did three of the recipes on Sunday (more coming up on those things in my next couple of posts.)

But back to Saturday. I was fairly busy. Went to the gym, got more stuff ready to go to Goodwill, found two boxes of kitchen utensils in my garage that had been in storage for 5 years (some really great stuff!), and I was able to go through my utensil drawers and purge everything that was not-as-good quality to donate, and then reorganize my drawers!

For dinner, I made this:

(whole grain pasta, chicken, pesto, broccoli, cherry tomatoes)

From this cookbook:

It is designed to be a cold pasta salad, but I opted to serve it hot. Since neither of us are fans for raw tomatoes, I sprinkled them with a little bit of salt and olive oil and roasted them first. Josh wolfed his portion down without even picking out the tomatoes like I thought he would. He loved it. I'll definitely make it again!

Sunday was my jam-packed (no pun intended!) day. We woke up bright and early and made breakfast... Josh made pancakes and I did the bacon.

The pancakes were a comedy of errors. He uses a certain mix and then embellishes it the way his grandma did - brown sugar, lemon juice, etc. However, we were out of his mix. I had some Barefoot Contessa pancake and waffle mix that I had gotten a while ago, so we used that. We had just enough of it to make one batch of pancakes. Except he followed the directions for waffle mix by mistake and it was quite runny. We added extra flour and hoped for the best (they turned out fine). Later, I discovered we forgot to add the butter (We had put it in the microwave to soften and I found it when I was cleaning out the microwave!), AND the mix we used had expired a couple of years ago! But you know what? They tasted great and no one died. I am horrible at making bacon, but it turned out ok. I sprinkled brown sugar on it when it finished cooking - tasted great!

After breakfast, we gave the house a good cleaning, and I decided I was going to make some fig jam that day, so I headed to the farmer's market. Didn't find any figs, but saw a lot of other pretty things. I realize the pictures all look the same, but I cannot resist taking pictures of beautiful things en masse.

(I am not an orange pumpkin girl - I like the ones that aren't the norm - blue/grey, white, warty...)

I finally found some figs at Whole Foods (and I also got a piece of mexican chocolate cheesecake for the Bipster and I to split - it was delicious. Tastes like the spicy mochas I make in cheesecake form!) and then I went home and made two types of vodka infusions AND canned a batch of fig jam (how-to posts on those coming up next). I was really feeling my inner Martha shining through again. It was great!

Then I finished our thank you cards, sent out wedding announcements to our extended family, spent some quality time with Bip and biore pore strips:

tried some yoga on fit TV (really hard to do because they want you to do positions where you're looking at the ground, but then they change positions and if you're not really familiar with yoga, you don't know what to do without looking up at the TV, even though you're supposed to be looking down) but that really didn't go well, so I did some meditating instead, cuddled with my husband a little, and then went to bed!

*I belong to a book of the month club (bomc2.com). It's 9.95 per month, and free shipping always. You just make a list of what books you want in what order, and each month, the first book on your list is shipped to you. It's wonderful!

P.S. Josh also pressure washed the house (and sidewalk) on Friday and it looks amazing! Really makes me want to paint the porch and front door ASAP, but that's going to have to wait until spring, I think.

Recent Reads

Even though I have an entire room of my house devoted to books (although Josh has kind of taken it over and calls it his 'office.' It's a library, damn it!), I have yet to devote a post to my papery loves. So here's one!

I read a lot. I started reading when I was two (really!), and I haven't stopped since. Whether my nose is in a book, my iphone, or my computer, chances are I'm always reading something whenever I can. Even the back of a shampoo bottle when I'm in the tub (but usually, I bring a book)! I've come to accept that my brain is wired differently than most, and reading is almost a compulsion for me. It's something I have to do, and I enjoy it immensely. For a while, I had a second job at Goodwill. All those secondhand books at rock-bottom prices were my kind of crack... thanks to Goodwill, I have several unread books still on the shelves to read when the mood hits me.

I usually have one or two books in my purse - just in case! - and sometimes I start four or five books within a period of a few days. Usually one 'sticks' and I finish it quickly, and dawdle with the others until I find another one that 'sticks'. I tend to read a lot of suspense/crime/mysteries, because they go quickly, they tease my brain, and all the bad guys are caught at the end. Plus, they are easy to find - I can always find a good one at Kroger or even Walgreens if I am in the mood for one.

I also tend to go on Biography benders every now and again. I'm kind of coming off of one now. I usually have 'phases' of what I am into. I'll read 5 or 6 mysteries, feel burned out on that genre, move on to 2 or 3 biographies, then feel the need for some fluffy fiction with a happy ending.

These are the books I have most recently read or am currently reading. Maybe you'll find something that interests you. Enjoy!

This is the book that started my most recent biography binge. I remember when I was very little, my Papa had an 8-track of George Jones and Tammy Wynette's duets. He used to take me everywhere with him, and we listened to it all the time. And then one day, he turned my world upside down by telling me Tammy Wynette and George Jones were divorced and had been since before I was even born. I was heartbroken, because I just loved them. I would pray every night for them to get back together!

When Tammy Wynette passed away several years ago, there was some controversy surrounding the circimstances of her death. A good source to read up on it is here (I promise, it's really interesting!):

http://scottmichaels.com/ (go to "Directory" and click on "Tammy Wynette")

Her last husband sure doesn't seem like a very nice man, does he? I had the displeasure of metting him once.

All the Tammy Wynette overload inspired me to pick up Mr. Jones' book off the shelf:

He wrote this book before Tammy died, I wonder how differently it would have read if he had written it after her passing? Love me some George Jones, and I found his book fascinating - he lived a crazy life! (It has since calmed down, praise the Lord)

The country music biography high  I was on launched me into this newly released book by Roseanne Cash (daughter of Johnny, step-daughter of June Carter Cash and wonderful singer in her own right):

It seemed only fair that I read it, since I've read one of Johnny's two biographies (I read his later one... I do have his first one on the bookshelf, waiting), June's biography, John Carter Cash's book (a tribute mostly to June, but a great resource on all things Cash), AND Johnny's first wife's (Vivan Cash) book, as well. Of those books, Vivian's certainly paints quite a different picture of things... And I've gotta say, she's the one I believe when it comes to certain things. A lot of people idolize and romanticize the love that Johnny and June had. I don't doubt that it was a great love, especially in their later years, but after reading Vivian's book, I don't doubt for a moment that June was a very manipulating woman... She claims to have gotten Johnny off of drugs, but never really mentioned that she SUPPLIED Johnny with drugs. Yeah. And had a pretty big drug problem herself. Hmmm. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Vivian, Johnny and June all passed away within a year and a half or so of each other, and I reccomend reading any of their books if you are a fan (Vivian's book is mostly letters from Johnny when he was in the service. I skipped over most of them and read the actual meat of the story, which was just a few chapters at the beginning and end.)  I have not finished Roseanne's book yet, although she's quite a lovely writer. It reads like poetry, but I am slightly biographied-out at the moment.

I needed a lighter read, so I devoured this in just a couple of days:

It might not seem like light fare to many, as it's the story of "Stevie", and it goes back and forth from her past (having a schizophrenic mother who threw both her and her sister over a bridge in an attempt to kill them, and then killed herself {Stevie was the only survivor}), and her present (having recently lost 100+ pounds after Gastric Bypass surgery and finding herself and also coming to peace with her past and her guilt over not being able to save her little sister). It's not world-changing literature, but it's a quick read and the characters crawl into your heart and stay there. I really loved it, and highly recommend it.

Next, I read this (also in just a couple of days.)

It was surprisingly similar to "Such a Pretty Face" - wonderful characters, schizophrenic mom, but a very good book in it's own right. Also highly recommended. Most of the book took place in Savannah, and I really loved revisiting that city, even if only through a book. I could almost smell the marshy air. Mmm.

Currently, I'm back into forensic mystery mode, so I'm reading:

...but also trying to cultivate a little bit more of my spiritual side and self-awareness with these two books (recommended to me by Bip, my personal Zen Master):

Bettering myself seems to be a never-ending journey, but at least I'm trying, right? Some never even bother.

Happy reading!

Just do your job, razor. Stop judging!

Daily Photo(s) 9.19.10 - the dog days of summer.

We relocated the bed in the spare room and it seems to have become the prime napping spot for the boys.

Julio was extra-special cuddly this weekend. Love it!

I love these letter balls I got at Michael's for $1 each. Pottery Barn sells them for considerably more, but I'll take the dollar versions! I am still looking for the perfect home for them, but right now they are residing near some Tybee seashells.

Our Cottage - The Shrimp (Wedding Post #6)

I have been a horrible blog updater.

This should wrap up all my wedding/honeymoon posts, though. I decided to end with what was our little home away from home while we were in Tybee. The name of the Cottage is "The Shrimp", and we rented it through Mermaid Cottages. I included the link so you can see more pictures of it - I really didn't take many good photos of the rooms themselves, just the little details I found charming.

http://bookings.mermaidcottages.com/site/Overview/PropertyID__15722/page__5/2390/DesktopDefault.aspx

Isn't it cute?

When you open the front door, you walk into an explosion of happy, beachy color. Who wouldn't want to honeymoon here?

I loved the second bedroom!

There were many little 'shrimp' details throughout...

We bought an ornament identical to the fan pull below as a reminder of this beautiful place!

(doesn't that make you hungry?)

Cute little signs and cottage-y paintings were hung all over:

Our favorite spots were the colorful and relaxing screened-in porch...

...and the outdoor shower!

We hated to leave, so we left a little piece of ourselves behind... one of our centerpieces.

Can't wait to go back!
